I have lost all my natural teeth! Can dental implants help me?
Dental implants can change your life style completelly. There are two basic treatment options for the edentulous patients.
We can either support your denture on implants in order to make it more retentive and stable, or we can fabricate a fixed prosthesis that feels like your natural teeth.
Depending on the number of implants you will have placed, you can basically choose between a removable or a fixed porosthesis.
Can I improve my denture's performance?
By placing 2 implants in the mandible or 4 on the maxilla, you can turn your denture to a much more stable prosthesis.
Removable prostheses of this type are called overdentures and are retained by the implants with ball attachments or with a bar that connects the implants together.
Implant supported overdentures offer stability and self confidence.Additionally, maxillary overdentures leave the palate free allowing better taste ability compared to the conventional dentures.
Can I have a fixed prosthesis?
When possible to place an adequate number of implants, then your prosthesis can be fixed.
This type of prosthesis is the closest you can have to your natural teeth. It can be removed only by your doctor and gives you self confidence since it is not moving while speaking or eating.
A fixed prosthesis is supported by at least 6 implants on the maxilla and 5 in the mandible.
The number of the implants is decided after thorough evaluation of every case and it depends mostly on the amount of available bone.
Am I good candidate for a fixed prosthesis?
This depends mostly on the amount of bone left in your mouth.
Generally, it is rather predictable to have 5 implants placed in the anterior area of the mandible since there are no significant anatomic features in the area.
Placement of implants in the maxilla, is more difficult because of its anatomy. We need at least 6 implants for a fixed prosthesis. Even in compromised cases, the bone augmentation procedures available to us today make the procedure predictable.
What is a fixed prosthesis made out of?
A fixed implant supported prosthesis can be made out of metal, acrylic teeth and pink acrylic resin and its called hybrid or it can be fabricated out of metal and porcelain and is called metal ceramic.
How much time is needed for my implants to be restored?
Usually it takes 2-6 months to have implants restored. During that time, bone grows over the implants and they are being osseointegrated.
We are also able to fabricate a fixed prosthesis in the mandible the same day the implants are placed, since it has been proven that good quality bone can withstand the extra forces and allow implants to osseointegrate successfully.
